Here’s a crunchy snack that includes ingredients from the three food groups: Fruit and Veggies, Protein and Whole Grains. Easy to make and as much fun to make as eat. If little fingers are doing the cutting, be sure to have all hands on deck for supervision.

There are over 8000 different types of apples in the world and each apple has a different flavour. Try this recipe with different types of apples. Take your time and use your senses while preparing the apples. How would you describe the flavour: sweet or sour? How about the texture: crunchy or soft? How about the juiciness: juicy or dry? Close your eyes and smell the apples. Do they smell the same?

Yield: 1 servings
Preparation Time: About 15 minutes

INGREDIENT LIST

  • 1 apple, cut into 6 pieces with an apple cutter, or knife
  • ¼ cup seed or nut butter
  • ¼ cup granola

EQUIPMENT LIST

  • apple cutter or small knife and melon baller
  • cutting board
  • small offset spatula or butter knife
  • small bowl for granola

METHOD

  1. Cut apple using an apple cutter into 6 equal-sized pieces. If you don’t have an apple cutter, cut apple in half using a see-saw cutting motion. Use a melon baller to safely remove the core. Lay the apple halves flat side down on a cutting board. Cut each half into 3 equal-sized pieces. You’ve cut your apple into sixths.
  2. Spread a small amount of seed butter on one side of each apple piece.
  3. Holding on to the edges of the apple pieces, dunk into granola.
  4. Place on a plate or tuck into a container for a to-go snack.
